Thursday Inspiration: Is Being “Strong” Just Another Word for Numb?

We praise it constantly—"You're so strong."
But have we ever stopped to ask: what does “strong” really mean? And who benefits when we stay silent, self-contained, and emotionally detached in the name of strength?

In many cultures, families, and even therapy spaces, “strength” has been redefined as not feeling, not breaking down, not needing help. We glorify the person who holds it together, who doesn’t cry, who “pushes through.” But at what cost?

When “Strength” Becomes a Survival Mask

True emotional resilience isn’t about suppressing your feelings—it’s about facing them.

So why are we still clinging to this outdated idea that vulnerability = weakness?

Somewhere along the way, we started equating emotional numbness with resilience. But being numb isn't strength—it's a trauma response. It’s what happens when the world tells you that expressing pain makes you a burden.

💚 Numbness keeps you functioning, but it doesn't help you heal.

The High Cost of Pretending to Be Okay

Have you ever told someone, “I’m fine,” when you were falling apart inside?
Have you ever swallowed your tears because someone once told you to “be strong”?

You're not alone. In our society, emotional suppression often masquerades as maturity. But bottling things up doesn’t make us stronger—it makes us sick. Studies show that long-term emotional repression is linked to anxiety, depression, and even chronic physical illness.

The stronger you pretend to be, the more isolated you may feel.

And yet, asking for help is often viewed as a weakness.

We need to change that narrative.

Redefining Strength in a Healing World

True strength looks like:

✔️ Saying “I need help.”
✔️ Taking a break before you burn out.
✔️ Letting yourself cry.
✔️ Naming your emotions—without judgment.
✔️ Choosing peace over performance.

You don’t have to earn your worth by enduring pain in silence.

💚 Your softness, your grief, your truth—they are not signs of weakness. They are evidence that you are fully human.
