Thursday Inspiration: Is “Boundaries” Just the New Buzzword for Avoidance?
In recent years, "boundaries" have taken center stage in every self-help book, therapy session, and wellness podcast. But here’s a question worth sitting with:
Are we truly setting boundaries to protect our peace—or are we using them to avoid growth, discomfort, and accountability? 💚
Yes, boundaries are essential. Yes, they’re a sign of self-respect. But when do boundaries become a shield instead of a bridge?
When “Protecting Your Energy” Becomes a Wall
We've all heard phrases like:
🔹 “I don’t have the energy for this.”
🔹 “I’m protecting my peace.”
🔹 “If it costs me my mental health, it’s too expensive.”
These mantras can feel empowering, and sometimes they are. But what if we're also using them as a spiritual bypass—avoiding hard conversations, uncomfortable truths, or our own shadow work?
Sometimes, true healing looks like:
💚 Staying present during a difficult conversation.
💚 Sitting with discomfort instead of cutting someone off.
💚 Admitting, “I need space,” but also asking, “Am I running or healing?”
Real Boundaries Require Real Self-Awareness
Setting healthy boundaries means knowing your limits—but also checking your intentions. Are you acting from love or fear? Healing or hiding?
Here’s a litmus test:
👉 Does this boundary create connection or reinforce isolation?
👉 Is this helping me grow or keeping me stuck in a cycle of avoidance?
True growth lies in the tension between honoring your needs and engaging with life—even when it's messy.
Healing Isn’t Always Comfortable (And That’s Okay) 💚
Discomfort is not your enemy. Growth demands it. Healing sometimes requires sitting in the awkward silence, holding space for grief, or working through conflict instead of ghosting it.
Boundaries should be tools, not traps.
So before you say, “This is a boundary,” ask yourself:
🌱 Am I setting this to grow or to avoid?
🌱 Am I honoring my healing or hiding from it?
