Thursday Inspiration: The Illusion of Closure

In the realm of mental health and personal growth, we’re often taught to chase “closure” like it’s a finish line that will set us free. Closure is romanticized in therapy sessions, breakup conversations, and healing journeys—as if it’s a guaranteed reward for confronting pain the “right” way.

But what if closure isn’t a moment of peace waiting at the end of the tunnel? What if it’s a moving target shaped more by our expectations than reality?

At Serene Pathways Counseling, we’ve seen the emotional toll this pursuit can take. Many clients arrive exhausted—not from what happened to them, but from the belief that they’re failing at healing because they haven’t reached that elusive moment of finality. The idea that you must get closure to move on can be more damaging than the loss itself.

Sometimes there’s no apology. No satisfying explanation. No justice. And yet—healing is still possible.

The truth is, closure is not a one-size-fits-all destination. It can be messy, nonlinear, and entirely self-defined. It doesn’t require permission from the person who hurt you. It doesn’t demand you tie everything up in a neat little bow. For some, closure is found in acceptance. For others, it’s about building something new that makes the past irrelevant.

The pressure to seek closure can keep you stuck in a loop—replaying, reanalyzing, reopening wounds. And yet, stepping away from that loop can feel like giving up. But it isn’t. It’s an act of courage. Choosing peace over explanation is one of the most radical, freeing decisions you can make.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect words or the right moment to move forward, let this be your reminder: closure doesn’t come from someone else giving you peace. It comes from you choosing it—on your terms.
