SOULFUL SUNDAY: Permission to Pause: Embracing Stillness Between Sessions

In therapy work, it’s easy to move from one client to another without catching your breath. Yet, what happens in the pauses often defines how well we serve.

Stillness is not wasted time. It’s where reflection and emotional integration happen — both for you and for your clients.

The Space Between

That small gap between sessions is more than scheduling convenience. It’s a sacred space where your nervous system recalibrates and your mind releases the emotional weight of one story before entering another.

When you skip these pauses, emotional residue builds up. Over time, it becomes harder to stay attuned and empathic.

The Practice of Micro-Stillness

You don’t need 30 minutes. Even two minutes can change your internal rhythm. Try:

  • Breathing deeply while unclenching your hands

  • Sitting quietly and noticing what emotions linger

  • Gently stretching your shoulders before writing notes

  • Looking out a window to reconnect with the present moment

Why It Matters

Stillness between sessions helps you maintain presence without absorbing. It sharpens intuition, restores emotional neutrality, and prevents compassion fatigue.

In stillness, you remember why you chose this work — not just to fix, but to witness healing unfold.

Give yourself permission to pause. The stillness you cultivate within becomes the calm your clients feel.
